New office to support children in need

Recently Churches of Christ Care’s child protection services, Care Pathways and Options, opened their new office in Yatala, which will support children and young people who cannot live at home with their parents. The office is currently responsible for supporting the placement of 245 children and young people across the South East region through our foster care, residential care, semi-independent living and options programs. Staff also work with 18 families via our assessment and intervention program.

The opening was attended by the Honourable Phil Reeves, Minister for Child Safety and Minister for Sport, Margaret Keech, State Member for Albert, Geeta Chhatbar – Acting Regional Director (Department of Communities), and Bryan Smith – Executive Director of Foster Care Queensland, as well as carers, representatives from the department, and Care Pathways staff.

Every year our child protection programs across Queensland provide placements and ensure support for over 1000 children and young people, and this number will increase significantly following success in the recent funding round.

While we are proud of the scope and services we provide, we are most proud of the achievements of those in our care and those that care for them. For example:

  • the young person in our Options program who is juggling a part time job and TAFE studies, and who has her sights set on uni;
  • the baby and toddler in our foster care program who since coming into care are more settled, accepting a more balanced diet, and catching up with age related milestones;
  • the foster carer who is using a variety of strategies to ensure that the bridge between child and birth mum is maintained – things like ensuring that when mum visits, the child will be dressed in the clothes that mum gave her; and
  • the 17 year old in our semi-independent program who has recently decided to return to school.
  • The work and commitment of our staff in the Yatala office is making a difference in the lives of children, young people, and families today and improving the community of tomorrow.
